Hi Stuart,
I just finished the Rheinsteig with 9 nights to
stay en route, and no advance reservations. I
encountered no problems in securing a hotel
room for the night (usually reaching my daily
destination and starting the search only at
around 7 pm) although occasionally
(weekends) some hotels were fully booked. If
you want to play it safe take a mobile with you
as often you\'ll find advertising boards for
accommodations on the trail, or carry a hotel
list with you so that you can call them earlier
during the day once you get a feel for how far
your feet will carry you.
Enjoy your hike,
Reinhard
